For decades Duke Energy — the third most polluting corporation in the U.S. — has known that fossil fuel emissions are warming the planet and destabilizing the climate. Duke Energy funded and promoted campaigns to deceive the public about these harms, undermine climate science, and block efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Duke Energy’s actions have delayed climate action and now communities like the North Carolina town of Carrboro are saddled with tremendous costs. That’s why Carrboro took Duke Energy to court in the first-ever lawsuit in the U.S. that challenges an electric utility for knowingly deceiving the public about the dangers posed to our climate from burning fossil fuels.

Without urgent action from electric utilities to rapidly phase out fossil fuels, the climate crisis will worsen.
